How to cancel pending transaction on OPay

OPay Pending Transactions

There's no way to cancel pending transaction on the OPay App. If you initial a transaction and by one way or the other become pending, you have to wait till the transaction is completed before you can do anything about it.

A pending transaction on OPay can either successful or decline. However, if it's successful, fine but if it's declined, the money will be reversed to your OPay Account.

Usually, pending transactions in OPay take 24 hours before final decision is made. If your transaction is still in pending for more than 24 hours, you can contact the OPay customer care service for further assistance.

Causes of Pending Transactions on OPAY

There are a couple reasons why you might see a pending transaction on OPay, but the most common ones are:

  • Transaction is being processed: This is the most common reason. OPay transactions are processed asynchronously, meaning it takes a little time for them to complete. Even if you successfully entered your PIN or OTP, the transaction status might still show as "PENDING" for a while. OPay recommends waiting at least 10 seconds before checking the transaction status again.
  • Authorization Required: Depending on the type of transaction (e.g. card payment) and your bank, you might need to provide additional authorization before the transaction can be completed. Once you provide that authorization, the OPay transaction should move from pending to successful (or fail if the authorization is denied).
  • Network Issues: When you initiate a transaction on OPay, the app needs to communicate with OPay's servers to process it. If your internet connection is slow or keeps dropping, this communication can be interrupted. OPay might not be able to receive all the necessary information to complete the transaction right away, leaving it in a "pending" state.
  • Suspicious Activities: If your OPay account information is compromised, someone else could try to make purchases using your funds. This would likely trigger a pending transaction while OPay's security system verifies or flags the suspicious activity. OPay actually has a fraud detection system in place. If the system detects anything suspicious about a transaction (like an unusually large amount or a recipient you don't recognize), it might trigger a "pending" state and prompt you for confirmation before completing the transaction. This is a good security feature, as it allows you to catch fraudulent activity before any money is lost.

If you've waited more than 24hours and your transaction is still pending, or you run into any other issues, you can contact OPay customer support for further assistance.
